Last week we had the pleasure of Past District Governor, Kevin Shadbolt, as our guest speaker to talk about the Gift of Sight Eye Project in Nepal. Kevin delivered a great presentation, highlighted by some very skilful use of the projector remote. However, on a serious note, Kevin had a message about a number of wonderful programs District 9830 is involved with in Nepal.
The first of these was the Gift of Sight Program. Last year under this program, 960 Nepalese people with very limited health care opportunities had their eyes checked, with many being treated for eye infections and 260 receiving cataract surgery. For those who had cataract surgery it literally gave their sight back and their lives as they can now reengage with the community.
Clubs in our District will have the opportunity again this year to support this program with two eye camps scheduled for Nepal this financial year.
Kevin also spoke of another project at a local primary school in the poor suburb of Hetauda were there is a great need to build a new classroom to expand the school to grade six level to allow the students to complete their primary education.
